The adventure begins early (pick-up around 7:00–7:30 a.m.) from La Paz, with a drive up to the high pass of La Cumbre (≈ 4,700 m) before setting off.
On Day 1 you’ll trek through cold morning air, possibly past snow and ice, then cross a high pass around 4,900 m, and descend along ancient pre-Inca and Inca-paved stone paths until you reach the small mountain village of Challapampa. There you’ll camp overnight, enjoy hot drinks and dinner by the river and rest under the stars.
On Day 2 you continue your journey deeper into the high-Andean slope and descend into the lush cloud forest zone of the Yungas region. After roughly 8 hours of walking through rolling terrain and increasingly tropical vegetation you set up camp in the village of Sandillani, where the climate shifts noticeably and you’ll feel immersed in nature.
On Day 3 the trail leads through warm, semi-tropical jungle terrain, with broad valley and river vistas, for about four hours until you arrive at the town of Chairo — from there you return to La Paz, having traversed a dramatic transition from high alpine pass to lush subtropics.
